Flowers and Poems

Oliver

Time was moving too fast for Oliver. It was already Friday afternoon and he had hardly seen Sofia since they woke up together Tuesday morning. It hadn’t been his plan to ask her to stay the night… but with Sofia, his plans had a tendency to go up in smoke and he had felt so damn attracted to her that he had suggested sex… That didn’t happen, but they had snuggled on the couch and watched movies – something Oliver hadn’t done in years. It had been perfect… or rather almost perfect; sex would have completed it of course, but even without sex it had been great.

He appreciated how Sofia was honest with him and wasn’t just using her friends or work as an excuse not to sleep with him. She had told him flat out that she couldn’t sleep with him without developing feelings for him, and he could respect that. Oliver didn’t want to hurt Sofia or give her false hopes. His attraction to Sofia had always been physical; he wasn’t in the market for a girlfriend, and it was a damn shame she couldn’t separate sex and feelings like he could, but then again, Oliver reminded himself, he was four years older and had more practice at it.

Oliver deliberately hadn’t called Sofia since Tuesday – partly because they could both do without working long hours for a few days but also to get some distance. He had spent every night out with friends, catching up with people he hadn’t seen for a long time. He didn’t need Sofia to have a good time, although the nights in his apartment working together had been nice.

When Sofia wasn’t angry with him or trying to win an argument, she was the easiest person to be around; she understood his way of thinking, he didn’t have to slow down to let her catch up to him, and she shared his humor and laughed easily. Because Sofia was direct and without a filter he didn’t have to play mind-reading games with her… in fact he had come to appreciate her company and see her as a good friend, and if she couldn’t offer him sex, he would still like her friendship. The thought alone was odd, as Oliver had never had a female pal in his life. Still, he was aware that when something exciting had happened this week, the first person he had wanted to share it with was Sofia. Hell, last night he and a friend had been surrounded by hot women in a nightclub when Oliver had found himself thinking he would rather have another movie night with Sofia.

Just now, the thought of how Sofia had jumped at the scary parts in the movie made him smile. Oliver wasn’t stupid; he had chosen a horror movie to make sure she kept close to him and didn’t feel tempted to leave in the middle of the night, and when Sofia had fallen asleep in his arms, he had stayed with her enjoying the comfort of her warm body against his.
